Frenzy, Indeed! Dr. T, November 2, 2024 What an election cycle! It will all be over in a couple of days, and I for one will be relieved. The apathy some have with voting at all will forever astound me. Especially considering the history of our country with whom they allowed to vote and whom they didn’t once upon a time. I recently learned that after African Americans earned the right to vote, they were charged an additional $2 to cast a ballot over everyone else. Like, that’s pretty wild. But then so were many atrocities that were legal back then. Probably what scares most people, as it should. Back then when is was a wild time to be alive—I guess when everything was ‘great.’ All I can say is, I am grateful I ensured my children grew up civic minded. Heck, I’m grateful that ‘I’m’ civic minded. Oddly, I don’t remember many books about raising kids discussing how much of a reflection of yourself you could possibly see in the children you raise. In the books back then’s defense, I don’t remember reading many tomes about childrearing other than the one every new mom read, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Nope, that’s a lie. I do remember reading Dr. Spock. Lol I’m that old where he was known as the authority on baby care. I’m totally digressing. As the world becomes more and more overexposed, I fear future presidential elections will get crazier and crazier—and not in a good way. Supporting a candidate to win is becoming a blood sport where there are no victors except for the upper echelon who ogle the frenzy like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons, rubbing their grubby hands together with glee. The travesty is most people are aware of it and still participate in the vitriol. Our very own psychological Purge. So, yes. I am honored to perform my civic duty alongside my adult children who have developed their own moral compasses. Advocate for the greater good of the many. Wrapping your mind around the marches and lost lives for this right only decades ago alone should supersede anyone’s apathy about participating. Especially when criminals are setting ballot boxes ablaze, literally. -Dr. T How about you? Counting the days till it’s over too? Blog African Americanscivic dutyelectionvote
